Tack For Good

Every day, working horses, donkeys, and mules around the world endure grueling conditions with ill-fitting, broken, or non-existent tack, grooming equipment and horse care items. Many of their owners, struggling with poverty or recovering from disaster, do not have the equipment needed to keep their horses, donkeys and equines comfortable and healthy.

Tack for Good is an initiative dedicated to changing this by collecting and redistributing donated horse tack and supplies where they are needed most. By giving unwanted tack a second life, we not only help equids and their owners but also promote sustainability in the equestrian world by reducing waste and repurposing useful gear. Every donation makes a difference, whether by directly supporting a horse in need or by raising vital funds for veterinary care.

How It Works

We accept donations of used but serviceable horse tack and supplies, including:

  • Saddles (English, Western, and other styles)

  • Bridles, bits, and reins

  • Halters and lead ropes

  • Fly masks and fly sheets

  • Grooming kits (brushes, hoof picks, curry combs, etc.)

  • Saddle pads, girths, and stirrups

  • Lunge lines, training aids, and protective boots

Once we receive your donated tack, we carefully assess each item to determine the best way to maximize its impact. Where possible, we distribute donated equipment to working equid owners in developing countries, ensuring that horses, donkeys, and mules receive properly fitting and functional gear. This can significantly improve the welfare of these animals, reducing painful sores, lameness, and injuries caused by unsuitable or makeshift tack.

Didaster response

In times of crisis, such as floods, fires, or economic hardship, we provide emergency tack relief to replenish essential equipment lost in disasters. Tack and gear are essential for many equid owners whose livelihoods depend on their animals for transportation, farming, and daily work. By replacing lost or damaged tack, we help these families and communities get back on their feet.

When items are unsuitable for direct distribution, they are sold to raise funds for free veterinary care for working equids. Think of it as a charity horse tack shop, where your unused items are transformed into vital medical aid, helping to treat injuries, prevent disease, and improve the long-term welfare of these hardworking animals.

Why Tack Donations Matter

In many parts of the world, working equids play a crucial role in their communities, providing transport, plowing fields, and carrying goods. However, their owners often have limited access to affordable, well-fitting tack, meaning that animals are frequently forced to work with ill-fitting or makeshift equipment that can cause serious pain and injuries. Tack shortages and financial constraints mean that even simple items like a well-fitting bridle or a padded saddle pad can make an enormous difference in an animal’s quality of life.

Your donated tack helps in four key ways:

1. Direct Support – Tack goes directly to equid owners who need it most in Egypt, Zimbabwe, South Africa, and India, improving the welfare of horses, donkeys, and mules.

2. Disaster Relief – Emergency tack donations help communities rebuild when their animals have lost everything.

3. Veterinary Funding – Unsuitable or excess tack is sold to raise funds for essential veterinary care for working equids.

4. Sustainability – By reusing and repurposing tack, we reduce waste and promote environmentally responsible equestrian practices.

How You Can Help

If you have horse tack or supplies you no longer need, consider donating them to Tack for Good.

  • Drop-Off Locations: We currently have collection points in the USA and UK and are actively seeking supporters in other countries to help with logistics.

  • Become a Collection Partner: If you run a tack shop, equestrian center, or farm and can help us gather donations, we would love to hear from you.

  • Volunteer: We are always looking for equestrian enthusiasts who can help sort, repair, and distribute tack or assist with fundraising efforts.

  • Spread the Word: Share our mission with your equestrian community, riding clubs, and social media to help us reach more donors and supporters.

What We Need Most

While we appreciate all tack donations, some items are particularly highly requested by equid owners in developing countries. If you have any of the following, we would be especially grateful:

  • Saddles in good working order

  • Soft, padded saddle pads to protect horses’ backs

  • Halters and lead ropes for daily handling

  • Comfortable, non-restrictive bridles and bitless bridles

  • Fly masks to protect from insects

If you’re unsure whether your tack is suitable for donation, feel free to reach out to us, and we’ll be happy to advise.
